Overhead Presentation

No doubt, by now you can guess how this presentation works and the value of using it. Like the hand touches we've been using to break our dogs forward from heel position, this reward placement encourages dogs to drive forward as they anticipate an explosive release.

Suitable for dogs that need a little extra incentive to keep up in heeling, this presentation encourages an upright head position as well as upward energy from the body. This placement can also serve as a nice compliment to our right circle work.

The overhead reward can be presented by either the right or the left hand. For dogs that are having a hard time leaving the left hand alone while it's loaded with reward, it makes sense to carry the food or toy in our right hand and bring that hand across the front of our bodies to present over the dog's head. For dogs that project their energy forward, it's a good idea to hold reward in left hand as it may draw them back a bit.

This video talks through the overhead delivery with the use of a tug. For our food motivated dogs, we're talking about the same functionality as a hand target or 'kiss' above the dog's head.
