Every time I put my hand out in the clockwork game she looks at it. Struggling on this one!

I think she is getting it!  What might help is some intermediate bridging when she looks back at the right place OR when she starts out at the right place.  Let those GOODS fly!

Karen.  There are times I think our dogs (and possibly family) think we've gone crazy!  It just doesn't look like Vivid is that sure about what you are after - and/or the arm coming up after you move is too much distraction for her at this point.  Check out :26 as an example  - it looks like she's watching you when you move but the break comes when you've basically stopped moving and then the arm comes up.  You could perhaps try;

  • making the same arm movement from in front (where she seems more comfortable) until she ignores it, then taking a smaller step to the side and repeating etc.
  • Try arm moving up while you move so its one fluid movement - it seems on video its more step first then arm up.  Again make it a little easier on her with a smaller step and even smaller arm movement until she gets it - high success, high reward.
  • Otherwise - if the aim is for her to maintain eye contact while you move around the clockwork and she can do that when you move - without the arm up then do you really need to do it (Forrest?).

Love the synchronised wagging at :15.  You do the arms - Vivid does the tail!

well done to both of you!

Forget dot point three (otherwise....) watching more videos i can more clearly see how that arm out becomes the hand to side of head environmental cue for attention at heel.  Sorry ... a bit slow to catch on at times!

Karen, beautiful.

I wouldn't worry about the brief look-away toward hand right now as you extend the arm. Most important is that she returns to your face as she is, showing understanding of how to get that food!

And, if we can add duration to her face-focus while that hand is extended, that will be a great next step. We'll also want to make sure that when you add movement to the arms/hands, she doesn't break focus, or if she does momentarily, that she returns to focus. She will get better at this, and it looks like she does understand that the way to earn reward is through your face!!!

You've got some other great suggestions here from students too to mull over.

As you start adding duration to her focus as your hands move, use a "good" to stretch the time if it helps. And if she breaks focus on "good", simply say it again, and reward her with "yes" for not breaking focus on it. If you have to repeat that a few times it's ok. She will get it.

Another thing you might do is release her from position when you "yes". Sometimes a release clearly defines the end of a session, which may make her more 'sturdy' within the session (because she more clearly understands it's end).

You're in a great place! Keep working around the clock and with increased distraction/movement from hands!
