Wk 4 HW 1 - sit

Fal gets a bit excited to work and is now throwing out behaviors to see if that will start the game so it took us a minute to get to the sit work. My definition of sit is to keep the butt on the floor no matter what is going on until told otherwise, in other words I do not say stay or wait.

Fal is a quick learner so the walk around only took two trials to teach and now he's got it. In the video I walk both tight and wide circles, in both directions, and only rewarding front and center.

Nice work!  That (stress) yawn when you first leave is SO typical.  When I judge rally and the handler leaves the dog for the walk around OR recalls, 99 out of 100 times the dogs yawn.

Peg - I noticed that yawn too. Before this video segment he had been bouncing around, offering behaviors that I would ignore and not pay waiting for him to be still and ready which caused the stress. This snippet is directly after that. As his understanding of the abort cue grows and he starts to get into the rhythm of things that stress will go away.

Solid stuff, Emily! Fal's got it.

I appreciate the lack of redundancy in the communication system. In ring, protocol is to deliver a 'resting' cue in the exercise. While my dogs don't need it (sit means sit until other cue or termination), it's an extra 'help' we can teach or use.

You guys are killing it.

And a little stress never hurt no-one!

Totally get that formality with the stay Forrest, just don't introduce that until the formal picture for the sport of choice. I'm still doing my research on which venues allow tris to participate - AKC is out, so is IPO. Right now we have rally and agility, hoping that PSA will allow him. Can you tell me if FR or Mondio will let him play? I have yet to fully read the rules. Thanks for the support all around! So many people write these guys off.

Totally Agree Emily!  And please understand I didn't mean to infer anything about the yawn except to share I see this constantly in the ring when dogs are left.  My take is context, and just as you say, practice will make this a very routine exercise.  So many ONLY practice this in two places - at home in the livingroom and at their classes.  I LOVE that so many here are taking this into the woods and everywhere.  Terrific training!

There is a fabulous newish OB venue you may want to check out.  CDSP - Companion Dog Sports Program.  All the way to OTCH.  tripawds are allowed, and there are no group stays.  You can praise your dog throughout and use food in between exercises if you want to reinforce.

IF there are no trials in your area but there are folks who like rally and ob, it's rather easy to put on trials - except there is that expense of bringing a judge in.  The sport owner, Sandi Ver Sprill, is happy to work with new areas to get it going, so perhaps a workshop might be in order??????

Thanks Peg, totally forgot about CDSP! I haven't done that in a while and forgot completely about it. I had the top dogs in Open and Novice a few years back. Glad to know that they don't discriminate!
