I've been working with Zoe for quite some time , (approximately 1 year) using BAT, Engagement Training, Leash Pressure (flat collar) coupled with an e-collar.  I've been able to have her focus on me with food on a touch pad (with no correction),  with a demo dog passing at approximately five feet away. I've been able to redirect Zoe with an e-collar, using an Einstein with a high of approximately 23 continuous. (Using Michael Ellis' method of conditioning), but unable get pass the fixation, with  lunging as she begins to feel the pressure.

She can now walk with my two demo dogs, a large female boxer and a small black terrier mix.  I keep her leash loose but never allow her to be within "striking "distance of my demo dogs.

When working Zoe for the first time on a prong, (as seen in the video) a dog happened to pass and you are about to see her reaction. This is the first time she has redirected on the leash, which you predicted using the prong.  Please give feedback on how I reacted to the situation, understanding that your system required more training with the prong prior to "setting her up" with another dog.  However, seeing that I've done so much work with her prior to this scenario, I wonder if she required more response from me with the prong.

My impression is that the dog is never engaged with you. In fact he seems fixated on his environment the entire time. To my way of thinking when you corrected him for reacting it was way too late. All the prong did them was take him from a 10 to a real big number. I think you needed to demand that he engage with you or until he is able to do that at least end his fixation long before he gets to that level. I think at that point all you could do was turn away. I think if you tried to block him or correct him harder you very well could have been bit. I learned a lot from watching this, thank you. I curious as to what Tyler's assement is. Excellent video!

Hey Mary,

First, thank you for posting this video, it is very valuable for everyone to see. Next week you will see in detail how we use the prong/leash in general for these situations.

Part of the problem is that there was sustained leash pressure while he was fixating. Also we use sustained pressure for conditioning, it tends to be cuter productive for directing the dog away from a trigger. You, unfortunately, learned that the hard way.

What I would have suggested doing would have been once the other dog came along, to abandon the exercise of "place" and focus on redirecting his attention away from the other dog.

At about 1:35 is when you can see her really loading up and fixating on the other dog. The longer she fixated, the closer you become to the danger zone. A big portion of the course from here forward is about giving you strategies to interrupt fixation before it becomes a problem.

I am really looking forward to seeing your weeks 4, 5 &6 homework as it will give us a lot more to work with.
