Why should the dog play in the same area it poops?

I noticed that mark teaches in Segment 1 to use an ex-pen for the potty area and right after the pup pees in the area we are supposed to give it a toy to play with... well, is this right? the pup should play right where she just peed or poo'd?

I thought it would be better to use a long line and when she's done bring her away from the poo area to play in another part of the yard. One part designated for potty and one part designated for play.

Right? or am I right?

Bryan, the inconsistency within the modules is frustrating me too.  I noticed you posted back in June 2015... I'm assuming that you've gone through the housebreaking already with your dog.  What did you learn about which way is better? I am getting my puppy in a few weeks.

I dispensed with the potty area and went straight to taking pup out on 1 then 2 hour schedule.  I bought 3 6x6 washable pee blankets on Amazon, which are great for wet feet too. Might only need the potty area for a very very young dog.   16 week old pup goes out twice before 8 am, after play, naps or meals.  Works out to every 2 hours except overnight which might be as long as 8-9 hours. Large breed puppy. He signals to go out by poking me with his nose or staring at the door.
