One of the biggest things I took away from this course is that proper protection development is about understanding the individual dog rather than simply teaching biting behaviors. The material on thresholds gave me a much clearer framework for reading dogs and reinforced the importance of building a developmental plan around the dog instead of forcing every dog through the same progression.

The concept of raising thresholds by channeling stress into confident biting was especially valuable. It changed the way I think about protection development by showing that we are not creating aggression, but teaching the dog to resolve pressure through forward engagement and clarity.

The breakdown of pre-teething, teething, and adolescent development also helped me better understand how important timing is. The emphasis on building confidence early, preserving motivation during teething, and carefully introducing stress during adolescence creates stable, thoughtful working dogs.

I also appreciated the focus on identifying each dog’s natural biting style and understanding the balance between equipment orientation and man orientation. These concepts make training much more individualized and fair to the dog.

What stood out most was the ethical standard of the course, especially the emphasis on recognizing when a dog is unsuitable for protection work instead of forcing conflict.

If I could suggest one improvement, it would be adding more case-study examples showing how these principles are applied to dogs with different temperaments.

Overall, this course gave me a deeper understanding of developmental bitework and will directly influence how I evaluate and develop dogs moving forward.

I found delving into the psychology of bite work for the dog the most beneficial. The way the instructor outlined the importance of reading the dogs actions to be able to tell what the dog is thinking, why its thinking it and what actions you should and should not take with that information.

I also found the stages broken down into the pre-teething, teething, adolescent and young adult to be very usefull aswell as looking at the different types of drive and the discussion of the dogs threshold
