This series is designed to allow a dog and handler to develop all the skills they need to have a solid foundation of obedience and to prepare them for off-leash work or resolving problem behaviors. The course (part one) starts with a reward-based foundation, before diving into leash pressure in Part 2. Tyler covers in detail the five basic commands that all dogs should know: come, sit, down, heel, and place (go to your dog bed). Giving simple, easy-to-follow exercises for the general pet owner, as well as in-depth theory and advanced concepts for the enthusiast or professional. Beyond simply teaching the dog commands, Obedience Foundations uses traditional commands as a framework for teaching handlers the fundamental skills concepts they will need to succeed in any endeavor. "Hey from Australia guys! Loved the course. Definitely agree there needs to be more emphasis on building relationships and utilising obedience and structure to solve most behavioural problems. In terms of the content it was very informative without being too scientific in the explanations and convoluted for the average dog owner.
My experience with dogs comes from when I was a canine handler in Australian Army Special Forces. I left the military and started my own dog training business called The Stoic Dog. I use the methods taught to me by an Australian company. Whilst I like the method and I do get results I feel that the one size fits all approach can sometimes not work. At the same time I felt that the complex processes we used in the military would be beyond the means and abilities of most dog owners. My aim at the moment is to strike a balance.
In terms of the methods and theory, what we learned in my old unit was very detailed and often complex. In saying that, I do feel it was very focused on the specific job we conducted (and so it should have). However I felt that there should have been more of an emphasis on behavioural science, obedience and problem solving. Since leaving that job and entering the canine training world I have set my sights on educating myself as much as possible, particularly during COVID 19 whilst my energy is channeled at home.
I intend to complete many more of this content and use the methods with my clients and even my own dogs. This course offered me small reminders of the basics that can be overlooked when you get too far ahead of yourself, and also a couple more tools in my tool bag. I appreciate the content and hope there will be some more being produced whilst people are isolated at home.
