An Overview of Remote Collar Training

What is the content? How is it organized?

There are a lot of opinions on remote collar training systems. Those opinions vary depending the  group trainers using remotes.

1- There are pet owners who just buy a collar because their dog won't come when called and without any training they start to SHOCK the dog.

2- There are dog sport competitors who want to fine tune behaviors required in their competitions.

3- There are professional dog trainers who use remote collars on clients dogs. There reasoning is "time is money and their clients want their dogs trained as quickly as possible, because leaving their dog with a pro is not cheap.

Each of these groups uses a collar differently.

1 - Pet owners quickly learn that stimulating their dog at high levels quickly results in their dog becoming confused and hating training sessions.  They end up with relationship problems with their dogs and some dogs never forgive their owners.

2 - People in the second group use low-level stimulation in their dog training. There a sub-groups in this category.

There are those who use the collar too much and never properly fade the remote from their training program. These people are basically nagging their dogs throughout their training sessions. This results in the dog being conditioned to the feeling of low level stimulation which they eventually just ignore, especially when the dog is in an environment with higher levels of distractions.

3 - As a general rule professional dog trainers use avoidance training methods (because they are quicker) with higher levels of stimulation.  Success is based on the trainer understanding  avoidance training and having perfect timing. In 60 plus years of dog training I never met a new dog trainer with perfect timing.

The second problem with dog owners who hire a pro is the dogs learn to do what the pro asks, usually rather quickly. The problem is when the dog goes home the dog owners do not understand the system, they cannot duplicate the training system that has been used on their dog and the dog often  reverts back to its old ways.

The purpose of a remote collar is not to punish a dog for not minding, but rather to redirect a dog from a distraction and get it to comply with what we are asking it to do with the least amount of force possible.

I purchased my first remote collar in 1978 and produced the first version of this course as a DVD in 2008. Quite frankly the information in this new course (which was produced in 2019) is light years ahead of what I put into that DVD 11 years ago.

Training dogs with remote collars is one of the most misunderstood dog training tools ever invented. This course is going to simplify the training program for remote collars. It will also demystify old myths concerning "electric collar training".

We show new trainers that remote collars do not have to hurt our dogs. We also help trainers understand exactly when and how they should add collar training to their obedience program. Doing this correctly solves many behavioral problems people have when they don't use remote collars the correct way.

We cover how to select the right collar for you and your dog. Our feeling is that remote collars should be very easy to learn and simple to operate. Too many collars today have bells and whistles that only complicate their operation.

In a step-by-step manner, we cover when and how to introduce a dog to the feeling of low-level stimulation. When this is done correctly our dogs do not get stressed. They also learn that stimulation doesn't hurt.

Once the dog has been introduced to what stimulation feels like we have a protocol that determines the dog's working level of stimulation.  Every dog is different. You will see that breed and size has nothing to do with what level of stimulation a dog needs to work.

In the segment titled "Determining Your Dog's Working Level of Stimulation" you will watch us go through the training protocol with 14 dogs of different breeds and sizes. That segment will convince you that every dog is different and the size of the dog has nothing to do with how it reacts to stimulation.

There is an old myth that remote collar training is painful to the dog. That may have been the case many years ago, but today that is 100% not the case. We teach pet owners to use low-level stimulation that is not at all painful.  We compare working stimulation levels to a tap on the dog's shoulder reminding him that it needs to pay attention and follow directions.

The beauty of remote collars can be seen when our dog is put in a highly distracting environment. With the remote, we have the ability to stop our dog from chasing distractions that may be in our working environment.

The methods we used to determine our dog's working levels of stimulation have changed. We have learned a lot about working levels over the past 11 years. We learned that when dogs are correctly introduced to the feeling of low-level stimulation they will respond to levels so low that we humans cannot even feel the stimulation.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Both the trainer and the dog need to understand marker training. Before remote collar training should begin it can not be stressed enough that both you and your dog must have a basic understanding of reward-based training and how it relates to distractions and duration. Trainers need to understand what their dog's high-value food reward is. For many dogs, this is above the level of a normal dog treat.

Testimonials

"I just briefly want to share my video with you on our success story with my five-year-old husky Mika. I’ve had a lot of dogs and I’ve done a lot of training over the years including having German shorthairs who had what we called shock collars 25 years ago. My husky and I hike very frequently and I’ve had her off leash most of her life. I’ve read huskies should not be off leash, so I worked very hard with her to get her to be off leash,. She does very well running through the forest with me but she’s also very smart and very stubborn. When it’s time to put her back on the leash, after about a 3 mile hike, it’s very hard sometimes to get her back. She will walk 20 feet in front of me or next to me. She won’t runoff she just does not want me to put her on the leash. Over the last six months the trails have gotten a little busier and I do run into other people more. I do want her to come back to me when I ask her to on my terms. I watched your videos and I followed your instructions. I wanted to share my results with you with this video. Thank you so much. We are so pleased with the results. I am also amazed that her working level was an eight in the beginning when I worked with her on the leash in my driveway, and now all I need to do is use the vibrate setting.

Thank You
Sandie and Mika"

"I just wanted to sincerely thank you for the online content you provide. The ecollar training is nothing short of fantastic. I have appreciated the step by step instruction and the accompanying videos. The protocol for establishing reaction vs. working levels on the ecollar has been a game changer for me. Completely different than what other well-known trainers suggest and your guidance gave me the missing pieces! I will purchase more trainings from Leerburg. I wish I could transplant your brain into my head. THANK YOU."
